Yeast Infection - The Causes and Treatments

Yeast is naturally found in all our bodies. Its 100% natural and it has its benefits for our bodies. It is usually most common in warm and moist areas such as in our mouths, under your breast, under your arms as well as in and around the genital area in both male and females. It also helps keep harmful organisms at bay in our digestive track. Yeast usually is not a big problem for us. The real problem begins when there is an imbalance and yeast starts to multiply abundantly. This excessive amount of yeast is what causes the symptoms associated with a yeast infection. Yeast infections are so common that 75% of women will get one at least once in their lifetime and almost 50% will get it more than once.

There are several ways that yeast can start multiplying and create an infection. Some antibiotics can actually cause an infection. This happens when antibiotics are used to attack bacteria and can't differentiate the difference between good and bad blood cells and therefor the good bacteria are also destroyed. The good bacteria are what helps prevent the spread of yeast within our bodies and gives higher chances of causing a yeast infection. It's also proven that long-term use of the contraceptive pill can also cause yeast infection.

Our daily lifestyles can also contribute to causing producing yeast. An excessive amount of carbohydrate foods can also cause yeast infection. Carbohydrates are more and more common in the average shopping cart. Yeast is heavy in carbohydrates. A diet that's high in carbohydrates can lead to excessive yeast in the intestines. Alcohol is also high in yeast and can increase the chances of causing this condition.

There are several methods used for treatment of this condition. Some of the most popular are over the counter treatments which can be in the form of ointments, suppositories, and oral medication. Creams and ointments, or sometimes known as antifungal creams, are typically placed inside the affected area to kill of the yeast.

Some examples of these are Monistat, Vagistat-1 and Gynezol. Over the counter products can give you temporary relief from your discomfort. However, a lot sufferers have reported recurrence even after these treatments were applied. Some will have to use several treatments before obtaining any success. It is important to be sure that you have a yeast infection prior to using any kind of medication. If you use these over the counter solutions and the problem still persists, you could have something else.

There are a few ways to determine if you have a yeast infection. Some of the symptoms include burning, itching and painful sex. Another way to determine this is by dry or flaky skin in the affected area. Another early detection of a yeast infection is a thick white curd like discharge. Other symptoms may include nausea, anal itching, redness, and soreness. Not all women will have all of these symptoms. And those that do should not confuse these with other conditions such as STD's and herpes.
